Frequently asked questions:
What do the NIJ protection classes mean?
NIJ protection classes:
The NIJ (short for National Institute of Justice) is the research, development and evaluation agency of the US Department of Justice (DoJ).
The NIJ establishes standards for various types of protective and communications equipment used by law enforcement agencies. The agency also establishes and maintains standards for body armor.
What does this mean for resilience?
-NIJ Level 3A protects against:.357 SIG FMJ Flat Nose (FN) projectiles with a velocity of 1,470 feet/second (448 meters/second) and a weight of 125 grams (8.1 g).44 Magnum Semi Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) bullets with a velocity of 1,430 feet/second (436 meters/second) and a weight of 240 grams (15.6 g).
This protection class therefore protects against handgun threats.
-NIJ Level 3 protects against:7.62 mm NATO FMJ bullets (.308 Win/7.62x51) with steel jacket and a velocity of 2,780 feet/second (847 meters/second) and a weight of 147 gr (9.6 g)This includes AK 47 projectiles (7.62x39)
-NIJ Level 3+ is not an official class of the Institute of Justice, but protects in addition to Level 3 against: Hard core bullets (armor piercing) in 7.62 and 5.56 and protects better against double angle shots Level 3+ is the ideal solution for all situations where no calibers above 7.62x51 are expected, i.e. calibers in the sniper range
-NIJ Level 4 protects against: .30-06 /7.62x63 M2AP armor-piercing bullets with a velocity of 2,880 feet/second (878 meters/second) and a weight of 166 grams (10.8 g). It is the highest protection class and offers protection even against large calibers, but plates in this class are heavier and more expensive.
What do the protection classes SK mean?
The SK classes correspond to the technical guidelines, also known as TR. The TR is the most common German standard for testing ballistic protective vests and protective vests with stab protection. The guideline includes various test methods, protection classes and ballistic requirements.
Protection classes:
Protection class 1 (SK 1): Caliber: 9×19 mm, bullet type: FMJ/RN/SC, impact velocity: 415 m/s ± 10 m/s
Protection class 2 (SK 2): Caliber: .357 Magnum, bullet type: FMs/CB, impact velocity: 580 m/s ± 10 m/s
Protection class 3 (SK 3): Caliber: .223 Remington & .308 Winchester, Bullet type: FMJ/PB/SCP & FMJ/PB/SC, Impact velocity: 950 m/s ± 10 m/s & 830 m/s ± 10 m/s
Protection class 4 (SK 4): Caliber: .308 Winchester, bullet type: FMJ/PB/HC, impact velocity: 820 m/s ± 10 m/s
What is the difference between SK (TR) and NIJ?
The main differences between the German guideline (TR) and the US guideline (NIJ) are the test methods, the different categorization of protection classes and the different bullets used: unlike the US guideline, the German guideline requires an applied shot, in which the weapon is pressed onto the sample with a force of 100 N during the shot. Furthermore, the German guideline requires angled firing at an angle of 25° as opposed to 45° and 60° in US tests.
The tests required in the TR (SK) with conditioning of the protective packages at -20°C and +70°C are not part of the NIJ requirement. The projectiles used are also not identical. For example, in the very common protection classes that are most likely to be compared (the German protection class 1 and NIJ Level IIIA), the German requirement does not include firing with the .44 Magnum; on the other hand, the 9 mm bullet used is not identical. The DM41SR bullet prescribed in the German TR (SK) is definitely more difficult to stop than the 9 mm cartridge used in the NIJ due to the steel jacket.
The difference in protection class SK 4 compared to level IV of the NIJ is similar. While the protective insert is subjected to a 3-shot test in accordance with German guidelines, the US standard only requires a single shot. The protective vests, which are developed and tested in accordance with the German TR guideline, are sealed with a moisture and water-repellent cover. In contrast to NIJ, no water test is carried out here, but waterproofness is mandatory, and last but not least, no stab protection tests are carried out for TR (SK).
What do the VPAM protection classes mean?
VPAM stands for the Association of Test Centers for Bullet Resistant Materials. VPAM is an organization whose main tasks are research, testing and development of bullet-resistant materials.
What do these protection classes mean?
There are many VPAM classes, we will limit ourselves here to the most important ones.
VPAM 3 protects against: 9mm Luger with an impact velocity: 415 ±10 m/sBullet weight: 8 gAnd the content of classes 1-2
VPAM 6 protects against: 7.62×39 bullet M43 FMJ/PB/FeCimpact velocity: 720 ±10 m/sbullet weight: 7.9 gAnd the contents of classes VPAM 1-5
VPAM 7 protects against:.233 Rem (5.56×45) SS109 bullet with an impact velocity: 950 ±10 m/sBullet weight: 4 g.308 Win. (7.62×51) DM111 with an impact velocity: 830 ±10 m/sBullet weight: 9.55 gVPAM 7 therefore protects against the most common types of Western assault rifle ammunition currently availableAnd the contents of classes VPAM 1-6
